Born in Muharraq in the palace of her paternal grandfather, the late Shaikh Mohammed bin Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa. She was brought up in Riffa in the care of her maternal grandfather, Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Her mother Shaikha Fatima bint Salman Al Khalifa is the eldest daughter of His Highness Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the former Ruler of Bahrain.
Her Royal Highness got married to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in 1968. They have four children (three sons and one daughter). The eldest is His Royal Highness the Crown Prince Deputy Supreme Commander, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who was born in October 1969.
The award aims to:
- Highlight the contribution of the public and private sector, civil society and women’s rights champions to worldwide efforts for the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
- Promote women’s empowerment and equality between men and women.
- Encourage innovative approaches and solutions to achieve women’s empowerment in policy and programming, and to provide a global space to celebrate these achievements.
- Foster creative and inclusive thinking by communities to collaborate to achieve women’s empowerment, recognizing that equality for all, means prosperity for all and sustainable development for communities and nations.
Individual women’s empowerment champions, civil society, public and private institutions are encouraged to apply.
