There are many good reasons to pursue entrepreneurship, which may yield equally good results. There are also terrible reasons that motivate people to start businesses.

Starting a business requires passion, focus and persistence, it is a commitment. If you are not all in, you are not going to make it. Below is a list of reasons not to pursue entrepreneurship:

  1. You Want to be Rich

Everybody wants money but being an entrepreneur mainly because you are motivated by money is likely to result in you being disappointed. This will interfere with your ability to make long term decisions for the business as you will be focusing your energy inappropriately. Motivation matters a lot when it comes to starting a business and if you’re doing it for the wrong reasons you won’t succeed in the end.

  1. It’s Trendy

Starting a business simply because it is the it-thing now will wind up with you failing. You will not last long in it. The whole point of starting a business is to solve an existing problem, or you have an idea for something that can improve a situation and, ultimately, improve people’s lives. Don’t go into because you want to be part of the masses, you will get tired before you get far.

  1. You Want to be in Charge

Don’t start a business for the social status. It may be seen as a quick way of putting CEO on your business card as entrepreneurship is sometimes seen an elite members-only club for CEO’s. The CEO part may get stuck to the business card, but will it be worth it in the long run?

  1. You Don’t Want to be Accountable to Someone

It’s true you get to call some of the shots and establish the direction of your company in ways you may not if you were working for someone else but the idea that entrepreneurship affords total independence and freedom is a total joke. You are accountable to your employees as they trust in you and your business enough to work for you. You are accountable to your customers to ensure that you are providing exactly what they need. You are accountable to your family for making sure that they are taken care of. The list is endless… Never pursue entrepreneurship because you are trying to run away from accountability.

  1. To be Famous

While entrepreneurship has the potential to increase your personal visibility more so if you rely on social media marketing, pursuing business conception and management for the sole purpose of getting yourself famous is a terrible idea. It is a noble aspiration being inspired by successful and well-known entrepreneurs and what they are able to accomplish but it is not a solid basis for starting a business. Persistently pursuing more personal branding opportunities will more often take you away from the office and hinder the growth of the business.

  1. Sick of Your Job

If hating your job drives your decision to turn in your notice and start your company, you will certainly fail. If you hate what you do for someone else you will probably hate what you do for yourself, even more. Become an entrepreneur because you love your job, because it excites you and fills you with passion. If you don’t love what you do, you will wind up being miserable. You need passion forward for what you’re running towards, not just passion for what you’re running away from.

  1. To Have Unlimited Free-Time

As an entrepreneur you will be able to set your own schedule; you will set your working hours, work whatever days you want and take unlimited vacations when you want. Your business’ success however depends on the effort you put in and always scurrying away to vacations each time you feel like it will likely result in the downfall of your business.

  1. Because, “Why Not?”

You may not have a specific motivation but the impression that just about anyone can start a business and be successful and then think “Why not?” Building the business for no reason other than the fact that you can may lead into you running into problems you had no idea even existed. For any business to succeed, proper research should be taken into consideration.

  1. You Want to Prove Someone Wrong

A business establishment requires passion, skills and a desire to serve people, customers and clients. Starting a business just to prove a point to someone else is not the right focus for a customer-facing business. An insult should never be your motivator for pursuing entrepreneurship especially if the aim is to establish an initiative that is sustainable.

  1. You Hate Your Boss

Hating your boss is a bad reason for wanting to become an entrepreneur because there’s so much you can learn from an annoying manager/boss. You will learn what not to do in business and how to treat your employees right to create a healthy working environment that will yield great results. Satisfied employees do better and contribute to the overall success of every organization.
